Chawli is black eyed beans. In Maharashtra it is popularly known as Chawli chi usal is a semi dry preparation with black eyed beans which is protein rich and served as mains as part of meals usually with chapati or rice. It is a simple preparation which is made regularly in every house. Here I have used the pressure cooking method which saves lot of time.
Ingredients
1 cup chawli
1 onion chopped
1 tbsp oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
Pinch of Hing
5-6 curry leaves
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chili powder
1/2 coriander-cumim powder
1/2 goda masala (optional)
Salt to taste
1 kokum
1 inch jaggery
Fresh coconut to garnish
Fresh coriander to garnish
Method
Wash and soak chawli overnight for about 6-7 hours. Drain the water the next day.
Heat oil in pan. Temper with mustard, hing and curry leaves. Then add chopped onions and saute well. Then add all dry spices turmeric, red chili, coriander-cumin, goda masala and mix well for a minute. Now add in the soaked chawli and mix. Add salt to taste, kokum and jaggery.
Adjust water. Ideally water should be just above the level of chawli. Transfer this mixture to a pan which fits in a pressure cooker. After whistle, lower the flame and cook for 8-9 minutes.
When the pressure is released, open the cooker and garnish the chawli usal with coconut and coriander. Chawli chi usal is ready within 15minutes.
Serve hot with chapati or rice.
